Certificate Course in Laboratory Animal Science
SLALAS has another step forwarded by organizing a Certificate Course in Laboratory Animal Science in collaboration with the Medical Research Institute (MRI) from 28th June to 01st of July 2016. The Sri Lanka College of veterinary surgeons (SLCVS) recommended the course by awarding two CPD points to veterinarians on completion of the course.
.The first three days of theoretical session was held at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Nugegoda. Prof.A.M. Akbarsha, Former Director & Chair Mahatma Gandhi-Doerenkamp Center (MGDC) for Alternatives to Use of Animals in Life Science Education, Bharathidasan University, India and Prof Majid Ghayour-Mobarhan, Director of Department of New Sciences and Technology, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran shared their vast knowledge and experiences with the participants as the foreign resource personnel. Mr. Vijitha Weerathilake, Prof. Mangala Gunatilake, Prof. Sugandhika Suresh, Dr. Mayuri Thammitiyagodage, Dr. Thranga Thoradeniya, Dr. Ramani Karunakaran, Ms Kalpani Ratnayake and Ms Ureshani Karunarathna were contributed as the local resource personnel for the event.
The most rated session by the participants was the practical session which was held at the Animal centre, MRI, Colombo 08 on two last days. It was headed by Dr. Mayuri Thammitiyagodage, the head of the Animal centre at MRI. SLALAS able to obtain a grant to facilitate accommodation and airfare for a foreign resource person from AFLAS ETALAST program with the valuable contribution of Prof. Mangala Gunatilake. Participants who gathered from different Universities, Institutes and Industries were most important component of the course as their feedbacks reveal our successfulness and encourage us in our attempt towards the advancement of animal experiments in Sri Lanka.
