The inaugural workshop of the Sri Lanka Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SLALAS)

After establishing SLALAS in December 2012, this inaugural workshop on “Introduction to Laboratory Animal Science” of SLALAS was held at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura on 27th and 28th February 2013. Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama, the Chairperson of the University Grants Commission was a special invitee at the inauguration. Prof. Kazuo Goto of Teikyo University, Japan as an International resource person shared his experiences and knowledge related to Genetic monitoring.

The workshop programme included diverse areas considered under Laboratory Animal Science, to impart and update knowledge of participants in the said area. The resource personnel were Prof. Mangala Gunatilake of University of Colombo, Dr. Mayuri Thammitiyagodage of Medical Research Institute, Prof. Kazuo Goto of Teikyo University, Japan and Dr. Sugandhika Suresh of University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The areas covered in the workshop includes

  • Introduction to Laboratory Animal Science
  • Ethical Guidelines - Sri Lankan System
  • Anatomy of Laboratory Animals
  • Basic Techniques of Animal Handling
  • Anaesthesia
  • Nutrition of Laboratory Animals
  • Breeding of laboratory Animals and Managing an Animal Facility
  • Humane Endpoints in Laboratory Animal Experimentation
  • Alternatives to Animal Procedures
  • Genetic Monitoring of Laboratory Animals

This programme also included practical training on Animal Handling and a demonstration on Experimental Techniques.

There were 37 participants from Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, Veterinary Research Institute, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Coconut Research Institute and University of Ruhuna. In the feedback given, participants appreciated all the activities conducted and also requested to arrange similar kind of workshops in other Universities and Research Institutions.
